Here are prayer prompts from Nolan's previous surgery:

I use the ACTS (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) form of prayer, and I like to pray with an open Bible. Below are some of my favorite scriptures, as well as Scripture references from a study guide on the God Who heals, sent by Donna Mae Stanton.

* Adoration for a God who is capable not only of healing us, but of saving us.

Deut 32:39 "See now that I myself am He! There is no god besides me. I put to death and I bring to life. I have wounded and I will heal, and no one can deliver out of my hand."

Ps 147:3 "He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds."

Matt 8:16-17 "When evening came, many who were demon-possessed were brought to him, and he drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick. This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: 'He took up our infirmities and carried our diseases.'"

Acts 10:38 "God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and ..he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him."

Most of us would consider healing to be a good thing - particularly if we were living centuries before MRI's, specialists of all sorts, diagnostic labs, vaccinations - let alone even basic public health and medical care. But not the Pharisees, who saw Jesus' healings as a threat to their power. This also was a culture of "blame the victim," where sickness was thought of as a punishment for sin. Even the Disciples believed this. In John 9:1-3, we read, "As He went along, He saw a man blind from birth. His disciples asked Him, 'Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?' 'Neither this man nor his parents sinned,' said Jesus, 'but this happened so that the work of God might be displayed in his life." He then healed the man - and then was interrogated by the Pharisees. Lord, we thank you for this opportunity for your work to be displayed in Nolan's life. We pray for such a healing that it will prompt many people to ask about You.

As much as earthly parents love their children, our heavenly Father's love for us is infinite. In speaking of His children Israel, God uses the example of parents - and the absurdity that a mother could ever forget a child - in Isaiah 49:15-16 "'Can a mother forget the baby at hear breast and have no compassion on the child she has born? Though she may forget, I will not forget you! See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are ever before me.'" Lord, we thank you for your infinite love for Nolan. We pray that you will comfort Kyle and Sandy through this heartbreaking and anxious time, with the reminder that as much as they love Nolan, You love him more and plan a wonderful future for him.

* Confession that we don't always believe He can work miracles.

II Chron 7:14 "If my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land."

I Peter 2:24 "He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed."

Even after three years in the presence of Jesus witnessing His miracles and listening to His teaching, the disciples still did not understand His power. In John 14:8, Philip told Jesus, "Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us." Jesus asks them to believe that the Father and He are one on the basis of His teaching, or at least on the evidence of the miracles they have seen. In verses 12-14, He promises, "I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it." Lord, we pray for the certain knowledge that you can work miracles; please cast out all our doubts. We pray as people who love our brother Nolan and see a bright future for him that you will work a miracle and heal his body.

* Thanksgiving for: the medical staff who have been treating Nolan, for advances in medicine that have enabled his treatment, for Godly family and friends surrounding Nolan, but most of all for Nolan's own faith and positive attitude. Praise that God worked all the details together so that Nolan could move to a treatment plan/team at Children's Hospital instead of Overlake.

Ps 103:1-5 "Praise the LORD, O my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name. Praise the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits – who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion, who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle's."

God equipped His craftsmen to built a sanctuary in Exodus 36:1, "So... every skilled person to whom the Lord has given skill and ability to know how to carry out the work of constructing the sanctuary are to do the work just as the Lord has commanded." Lord, we thank you for gifting Nolan's medical team with healing skills. We pray they will be used to heal Nolan.

God gifts people with a variety of skills. In Exodus 28:3, He talks about the garment-makers who would clothe His priests. "Tell all the skilled men to whom I have given wisdom in such matters that they are to make garments for Aaron, for his consecration, so he may serve me as priest." Lord, we thank you for giving these surgeons skills, and ask that they use them to remove all the tumors, so that Nolan can continue to serve you as he desires. And Lord, through Nolan let them see that you are the source of their wisdom.

* and Supplication, asking God to heal Nolan, for successful surgery, and for a pathology report that all the cancer is gone! Pray also for Kyle and Sandy, as well as Galen and Ben - for strength and comfort for their own hearts, and that they will be able to support and comfort Nolan.

II Chron 30:20 "And the LORD heard…and healed the people."

God encourages Judah in Isaiah 41:10 & 13: "So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand..... For I am the Lord, your God, who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you." Lord, we pray that Nolan and his family will feel your hand holding them; we pray for your strength through the surgery and recovery.

The Gospel of Matthew contains many reports of Jesus healing the sick. In chapter 9 alone, he heals a paralytic, a woman with a 12-year flow of blood, two blind men and a mute, drove out demons, and brings a girl back from the dead. Who could blame Him for being a little tired? Verses 35-38 say, "Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of he kingdom and healing every disease and sickness. When He saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then He said to His disciples, 'The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into His harvest field.'" Lord, we pray you will show compassion on Nolan, his family, and all who care about him. We pray for his healing, and that he can fulfill his dream of being a worker in Your harvest field.

While the God of the Old Testament told the people of Israel, "I am the Lord who heals you" (Exodus 15:26b), relatively few healings are recorded here. Read about some which are noted: Miriam (Numbers 12:9-16), Jeroboam (1 Kings 13:4-6), the widow's son (1 Kings 15:17-24), the son of the Shunammite Woman (2 Kings 4:1-37), Naaman (2 Kings 5:8-14), and Hezekiah (2 Kings 20:1-11). The New Testament, by contrast, is full of miraculous healings, not just those performed by Jesus (too numerous in the Gospels for me to list here), but also by the apostles in the Book of Acts. The gift of healing was used to build the church. And Lord, we pray for healing in Nolan's life so that he can fulfill his purpose of spreading your word to those who have not had a chance to hear it, building your church around the world.

Lord, we thank you that your love and care has been so evident to Nolan, and for the witness he has been to You through this illness. Lord, please renew his strength through the recovery process. We are reminded of this promise in Isaiah 40:27-31: Why do you say, O Jacob, and complain, O Israel, "My way is hidden from the Lord; my cause is disregarded by my God"? Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.
